Following our work on P&O’s next-generation cruise ship Iona, Jestico + Whiles returned to reimagine the public spaces of her sister ship. Arvia, which set sail in 2022, leans into a richer palette of bronze and warm wood tones, along with some key design features that set it apart.
Like Iona, Arvia is centred around the Grand Atrium, a triple-height space at the heart of the ship designed to draw the outside in. It’s a celebration of curves that captures the movement, freedom and spectacle of the ocean, offering guests panoramic views of the seascape around them. The space is designed to accommodate pop-up entertainment including live music and bespoke aerial performances throughout the day and into the night.
An elegant staircase of Italian marble forms the centrepiece of the atrium, with filigree metal detailing and a swooping shape. A twinkling modern chandelier made of hundreds of trumpet-shaped metal elements sets Arvia’s atrium apart from her sister ship, creating a sense of celebration and movement. A ripple of wood across the floor sets the stage for dancing, beneath a sweep of interlocking brass fins.
Creating a sense of intimacy within the ship’s grand spaces was an important part of our design concept. Subtle zoning through variations in fabrics and flooring, as well as carefully placed screens, help guests find their own spot.
Jestico + Whiles also developed a new look for many of Arvia’s 30 food and drink venues. As well as the return of The Keel & Cow gastropub and Anderson’s Bar, a rum bar with its own distillery, Arvia boasts new eateries including the vibrant all-American 6th Street Diner, which revels in neon details and vintage touches, with a working jukebox.
