Twenty years of graphene
This week marks 20 years since the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of graphene at The University of Manchester.
Formed of a single layer of carbon atoms, graphene is the strongest material ever discovered, despite being a million times thinner than a human hair. Its transparency, tensile strength and conductivity give it a huge and exciting range of potential uses.
The National Graphene Institute, designed by Jestico + Whiles for the University of Manchester, is now in its tenth year of operation. The building provides researchers with cutting-edge facilities, as well as supporting the cross-discipline collaboration that puts the university at the forefront of graphene research.
